Wizard of Oz Playground at Watkins Regional Park – Upper Marlboro, MD

Project Overview

The Wizard of Oz playground at Watkins Regional Park in Upper Marlboro, Maryland is a one-of-a-kind destination play space. It brings L. Frank Baum’s beloved classic story to life through themed design and inclusive play. Children of all abilities are invited to follow the yellow brick road through imaginative zones representing Kansas, the Emerald City, the poppy fields, and beyond. The playground is part of Prince George’s County Parks‘ commitment to creating memorable, community-centered outdoor spaces.

Inside the Wizard of Oz Playground

This project features custom Landscape Structures® PlayBooster® structures designed for climbing, sliding, and exploration. Interactive panels, animal-themed riders, and character cutouts encourage role play, literacy, and social interaction. Freestanding features add sensory and developmental play elements. Together, they create a space that is both playful and deeply immersive.

Oz-Themed Play Equipment and Musical Instruments

The playground also features a full suite of Landscape Structures’ Rhapsody® Outdoor Musical Instruments. These include metallophones, chimes, and drums. They encourage creativity, rhythm, and play across generations. Music becomes part of the storytelling experience.

Safe, Inclusive Surfacing

Safety and accessibility were central to this project. Surface America’s PlayBound™ Poured-in-Place surfacing is 3.5 inches thick and meets an 8-foot critical fall height rating. Installed in 100% color using 17 vibrant shades, the surface features Wizard of Oz-themed graphics. A durable aliphatic binder ensures long-lasting performance. The surfacing doesn’t just protect children — it enhances the storytelling.
