Project Overview
Watkins Regional Park is home to the beloved Wizard of Oz themed playground, a destination play space that brings L. Frank Baum’s classic story to life through imaginative design and inclusive play opportunities. The playground invites children to follow the “yellow brick road” through themed play zones that represent Kansas, the Emerald City, poppy fields, and more. Custom PlayBooster® structures provide climbing, sliding, and exploration opportunities, while interactive panels, animal-themed riders, and character cutouts encourage role play, literacy, and social interaction. Freestanding features add sensory and developmental play, creating a space that is both playful and immersive.
The playground also incorporates a full suite of Rhapsody® Outdoor Musical Instruments—including metallophones, chimes, and drums—that encourage creativity, rhythm, and intergenerational play. Safety and accessibility are enhanced through Surface America’s PlayBound™ Poured-in-Place surfacing, a 3.5-inch thick system meeting an 8-foot critical fall height. Installed in 100% color with 17 vibrant shades, Wizard of Oz-themed graphics, and durable aliphatic binder, the surfacing enhances both safety and storytelling through its vivid design.
With its combination of imaginative storytelling, inclusive equipment, musical play, and durable surfacing, the Wizard of Oz playground at Watkins Regional Park is a regional landmark—blending creativity, physical activity, and community connection into one unforgettable destination.
