Project Overview
The Turkey Thicket playground at Turkey Thicket Recreation Center in Washington, DC is one of the most imaginative and fully custom play spaces in the region. Installed in October 2013 and designed for children ages 2–12, this village and transportation-themed playground transforms an urban recreation space into a lively little town complete with mountains, train tracks, a farmer’s market, and much more.
All Aboard the Turkey Thicket Playground Train
At the heart of this space sits a custom Landscape Structures steam locomotive that travels through a mountain tunnel. Kids climb the mountainsides and scamper across a bridge. Then they explore the train from every angle — climbing over, across, and into it. This one-of-a-kind centerpiece drives gross motor development, problem-solving, and open-ended imaginative play all at once.
A PlayBooster® playstructure for children ages 5–12 adds rope climbers, rock steppers, balance bridges, and a Tunnel Slide to the mix. In addition, freestanding features like the OmniSpin® Spinner and Stepper™ Rock Climber create an energetic circuit of free-form play along the landscaped outskirts of the village.
A Turkey Thicket Playground Built for the Whole Community
The younger zone serves children ages 2–5. It features community-themed playstructures with rooftops that echo those of the surrounding Brookland neighborhood. Furthermore, a fully stocked farmer’s market play stand — built from glass fiber reinforced concrete with realistic carved produce — brings imaginative, social play to life in a way kids never forget.
The space is fully ADA accessible. Both age zones share a cohesive theme and design. As a result, this playground serves as a true neighborhood hub — popular with families from nearby schools and the adjacent recreation and aquatic center alike.
