Project Overview
Lawrence E. Boone Elementary School playground in Washington, DC serves the school community with two distinct outdoor play environments. Completed in 2020, the space supports elementary students of all ages and abilities. Each area reflects a thoughtful approach to physical development, imaginative play, and inclusive design.
Playground Equipment and Play Features
The younger children’s area features a Landscape Structures PlayShaper® playground. It includes climbers, slides, tunnels, and activity panels arranged in a linear layout. This layout encourages movement and discovery across the space. Bright colors and accessible pathways help children of all abilities navigate independently. As a result, students build coordination, confidence, and social skills through active play together.
Older elementary students find their challenge in a custom net climbing system. It invites kids to chart their own routes while climbing, balancing, and exploring elevated pathways. In addition, freestanding elements add sensory and cooperative play opportunities throughout the space. These include Rhapsody® outdoor musical instruments, the OmniSpin® spinner, and the Double Oodle® swing. Together they support vestibular development and encourage students to engage with one another.
Shade and Surfacing
Overhead, SkyWays® Single Post Pyramid shade structures provide sun protection across both play areas. They create a comfortable environment for active outdoor play throughout the school day. Meanwhile, colorful pour-in-place (PIP) surfacing from Surface America covers the ground throughout the playground. This surfacing adds visual appeal and provides a safe, impact-absorbing foundation underfoot. Furthermore, accessible pathways connect both play areas, ensuring every student can move through the space independently.
