The beach-themed playground at J. Franklyn Bourne Park in Capitol Heights, MD is where seaside adventures come to life. Opened in April 2019, this vibrant space serves children ages 2–5 and 5–12. Kids can slide down a custom lighthouse tower, swim with sharks, and explore a beach house — all without leaving the neighborhood. It’s the kind of place that turns an ordinary afternoon into a full-blown coastal escape.

Landscape Structures brought this nautical world to life with a mix of themed and freestanding elements. The custom PlayBooster® lighthouse main tower anchors the space. It features a Pod Climber®, a SlideWinder2®, climbing features, and sensory panels that spark curiosity at every turn.
A few features deserve a special mention. The Boogie Board™ lets kids surf and lounge in pure beach-inspired style. The Rhapsody® Grandioso® Chimes add a musical, sensory-rich layer to the experience. The Periscope Panel gives children a whimsical way to spy on the sharks below — straight from the top of the lighthouse tower. And for kids who crave movement, the Global Motion® brings a spinning, cooperative play experience that draws children together and keeps the energy going. Together, these elements create a multi-age space that encourages exploration, imaginative play, and active fun in equal measure.
A Surface That Completes the Seaside Story
The ground beneath this space is just as thoughtfully designed as everything above it. Surface America contributed colorful poured-in-place rubber surfacing featuring sand textures, ocean elements, and lifelike shark graphics. Viewed from the lighthouse tower, the details below pull children fully into the seaside world. The surface also keeps the space safe, accessible, and inclusive for kids of all abilities — so every child can join the adventure.
