Project Overview
The Indian Creek Playground in Berwyn Heights, MD is unlike any other play destination in the region. Sparks at Play installed this one-of-a-kind custom themed playground in April 2012 using Landscape Structures Inc. equipment. It welcomes children ages 2 to 12. Above all, it celebrates the Native American heritage of the area — specifically the Nacotchtank, an Algonquian people who were among the earliest residents of this community.
Indian Creek Playground’s Native American-Themed Play Features
Step onto the Indian Creek Playground and kids feel like they travel back in time. The design immerses visitors in a rich cultural landscape. Children climb custom play structures shaped like teepees and oversized dream catchers. They sit inside an Algonquian canoe and chat with friends through custom cornstalk Talk Tubes. A handcrafted concrete totem pole serves as a striking artistic centerpiece. Custom panels featuring Native American symbols add cultural depth and visual storytelling throughout. Moreover, Surface America’s PlayBound™ Poured-in-Place surfacing reinforces the theme underfoot — its bold zigzag geometric patterns and vibrant colors echo the Native American design language woven throughout the entire playground. Beyond its visual impact, the surfacing also delivers reliable fall protection and a smooth, accessible foundation for children of all abilities.
Nature Play Elements & LSI PlayBooster® Equipment
The Indian Creek Playground also weaves nature play seamlessly into the design. Custom GFRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) tree logs and a GFRC Rock Climber integrate directly into the play structure. These rugged, nature-inspired elements give children an organic climbing experience that complements the cultural theme. They encourage kids to scramble, balance, and explore. Additionally, Landscape Structures PlayBooster® equipment and custom freestanding features build climbing, balance, and coordination throughout the space. Together, every element — from the cultural storytelling to the nature play features to the surfacing below — creates an environment where every child can explore, connect, and grow.
