Project Overview
Hal and Berni Hanson Regional Park playground in Aldie, Virginia offers one of the most expansive and inclusive play spaces in the region. Completed in October 2022, this destination playground serves the Loudoun County community. Children of all ages, abilities, and developmental needs find something engaging here.
Equipment and Play Features
Landscape Structures anchors the space with multiple net climbing stations. Each station functions as its own self-contained adventure. The Evos®, PlayBooster®, and Weevos® systems offer varied climbing challenges throughout. As a result, children build upper body strength, balance, coordination, and spatial awareness. In addition, nature-inspired rock climbers, slides, and swings complement the climbing structures. Together they encourage children to explore movement in multiple ways.
A natural hillside runs through the center of Hal and Berni Hanson Regional Park playground. Roller slides, climbing challenges, and over-under bars take advantage of the terrain. At the hilltop, the Global Motion® spinner invites group participation. It also supports vestibular development for children of all abilities. Furthermore, freestanding play elements throughout the space offer additional opportunities for imaginative and cooperative play.”
Accessibility and Surfacing
Accessibility was central to the design of Hal and Berni Hanson Regional Park playground. Surface America’s PlayBound™ Poured-in-Place Safety Surfacing covers the main play areas. It provides a durable, impact-absorbing foundation underfoot. Meanwhile, a PlayBound™ non-infill turf system lines the hillside zones. This system combines a natural aesthetic with a safe and durable play surface. As a result, children of all physical abilities can explore the space independently.
Nature-Inspired Design
Hal and Berni Hanson Regional Park playground weaves nature throughout the entire space. Sculptures of bears, deer, and turkeys invite younger children to interact with the environment. Similarly, dragonfly imprints in the ground surface add moments of discovery underfoot. These elements connect the playground to the natural landscape of the surrounding park. Overall, they create a cohesive outdoor experience for the whole family.
The result is a space where children across Loudoun County can build physical skills and develop social connections. Families find a full day of outdoor recreation across a thoughtfully layered environment.
The combination of inclusive equipment, accessible surfacing, and nature-themed design makes Hal and Berni Hanson Regional Park playground a valuable community resource. It reflects the kind of thoughtful, people-first approach that Sparks@Play brings to every project.
