Project Overview
The Fields at RFK playground in Washington, DC delivers a recreation experience like no other. Sparks at Play installed this sprawling destination in May 2020 using Landscape Structures Inc. equipment. It serves children ages 5 to 12. Furthermore, it complements the surrounding athletic facilities with dynamic, inclusive play opportunities that welcome children of all ages and abilities.
Fields at RFK Playground’s Play Structures & Key Features
The Fields at RFK playground centers around two iconic LSI structures. First, a custom PlayBooster® tower challenges older kids with climbing, sliding, and lookout experiences. Second, a Netplex® play structure encourages social, active play through interconnected nets and pathways. Both structures feature integrated shade sails to keep kids cool and comfortable. Additionally, the playground incorporates a rich variety of freestanding play components that give every child freedom to explore at their own pace. The Cozy Dome® offers a fun, climbable hideaway. The OmniSpin® Spinner delivers vestibular stimulation and spinning excitement for multiple riders at once. Furthermore, the Oodle® Swing invites kids to swing solo or together in a uniquely social swinging experience. The Arch Swing Frame rounds out the swinging options with a classic yet dynamic play choice. Moreover, the We-Go-Round® brings inclusive spinning fun — welcoming children of all abilities to spin together side by side. The Boppity Bridge™ adds a bouncy, wiggly crossing challenge that keeps kids laughing and moving. A Roller Slide — built right into one of the site’s playful mounds — creates an exciting, sensory sliding experience that takes full advantage of the natural-feeling topography of the space.
Topography, Mounds & Shade Across the Campus
One of the most distinctive design elements of the Fields at RFK playground in Washington, DC is how the mounds, surfacing, and landscape work together to create a dynamic, multi-level play environment. Rather than a flat playground surface, the mounds add elevation and topographic variety. They give children an organic sense of exploration and movement. Kids climb up, roll down, and discover the Rollerslide tucked right into the hillside. What makes it all come together visually is the bold, vibrant PlayBound™ Poured-in-Place surfacing by Surface America. Bright orange and green color bursts pop against the mounds and play structures — adding energy, personality, and visual excitement to the entire space. Moreover, the surfacing flows seamlessly over and around the mounds, reinforcing the topographic design and creating a cohesive, colorful landscape that feels as dynamic as the play it supports. It also delivers a smooth, durable, and safe foundation throughout. Beyond the play structures, SkyWays® Single Post Cantilever delivers concentrated shade in key gathering areas. Moreover, SkyWays® Cantilever Hip shade structures line the many athletic fields across the broader campus — keeping spectators and families cool while maintaining open sightlines. Together, the play features, mounds, and shade solutions make the Fields at RFK playground a true community hub. It balances challenge, accessibility, and comfort for every child and family who visits.
