Project Overview

The Buckroe Beach playground in Hampton, VA is where coastal adventure meets thoughtful, community-driven design. The City of Hampton owns and manages this upgraded play space, and city officials shaped the design directly around community input. The result is a vibrant, inclusive destination that serves children of all ages and abilities — with more shaded areas, sensory-friendly equipment, and immersive beach-themed features that make every visit feel like a day at the shore.

This project reflects what happens when a city truly listens. Community members helped guide the design priorities — and their feedback shows in every detail. The upgraded space adds more shaded areas throughout. It also incorporates sensory-friendly equipment that makes the playground more accessible and welcoming for children with special needs. In addition, the layout invites children of all abilities to explore, play, and connect side by side.

Custom Features & Standout Equipment

Landscape Structures brought the Buckroe Beach playground to life with a remarkable collection of custom and themed play features. At the heart of the space sits a custom pirate ship — a one-of-a-kind centerpiece that invites kids to set sail on their own coastal adventure. Nearby, a custom giant fishing pole interacts directly with the themed poured-in-place surfacing below, creating an immersive, story-driven play experience unlike anything else in the region.

Additional standout features include the Cozy Dome®, a climbable hideaway that sparks imaginative play. The Fish Net Climber challenges kids to climb, balance, and navigate through a net structure that fits perfectly within the nautical theme. Furthermore, the Global Motion® brings cooperative spinning fun. The Sway Fun® Glider delivers a gentle, accessible swinging experience for multiple riders at once. Meanwhile, the SwiggleKnots® Bridge adds a wiggly, balance-building crossing challenge that keeps kids moving and laughing throughout.

Surfacing That Tells the Story

Underfoot, fully custom poured-in-place rubber surfacing that brings the entire beach theme to life from the ground up. Schools of fish, sharks, crabs, and jellyfish swim across the surface — creating a colorful, immersive environment that makes children feel as though they are exploring the ocean floor. It also provides a safe, durable, and ADA-accessible foundation that keeps every child in the adventure.
